City of Ames

Voted one of the best places to retire by US News, Ames is a small town “with the amenities of a big city” (ameschamber.com). Highlights include more than 30 parks, 55 miles of biking and walking trails, cafés and restaurants, movie theaters, the Furman Aquatic Center, Reiman Gardens, and Gateway Ice Skating Rink. Green Hills Community members participate in activities organized by the Ames Community Arts Council and Ames Main Street District.

Iowa State University

Less than two miles from Green Hills, Iowa State University’s points of pride include a beautiful campus landscape, the Iowa State Center with arts and theater, ISU Athletics, the Iowa State University Alumni Association, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) for individuals aged 50 or older who desire to continue to expand their knowledge in a wide variety of topics.

The program previously known as ISU’s College for Seniors received a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation in July 2008 and is now known as the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Iowa State University.

The Iowa State University Retirees Association was formed in 1975 to provide a link between the university and all retired faculty, staff, and their spouses. In 2006, the ISU Alumni Association began overseeing this program.

Mary Greeley Medical Center

Owned by the City of Ames, Mary Greeley is a major health care provider serving Ames, Story County, and beyond. Founded in 1916, the Medical Center was a gift from Wallace Greeley and has served as a municipal hospital ever since. Mary Greeley offers the lowest charges in the state of all medical centers of comparable size.

McFarland Clinic

Serving Iowa for over 60 years, McFarland Clinic is central Iowa’s largest physician-owned multi-specialty clinic. It has a network of more than 200 providers, 1,000 staff members, and several outreach clinics serving residents in 10 Iowa communities. More than one million patients are seen at McFarland Clinic each year.

The Senior Health Insurance Information Program is a free, confidential service of the State of Iowa that helps Iowans make informed decisions about Medicare and other health coverage.

Heartland

Heartland Senior Services

Heartland Senior Services provides nutritional meals, adult day care, recreational activities, and outreach to all Story County residents over the age of 60. Participants enjoy activities such as writing; theater; chorus; dances; games of bridge, 500, bingo and cribbage; exercise classes including Wii, yoga, and tai chi.
